“You are a rake, aren’t you?”
“Sticks and stones.” Slowly, ever so slowly, he caressed her buttock. Serena struggled for air.
“Everyone knows rakes are horrid. I agree.”
“Your tone does not suit your words, my dear. Nor do your breaths.”
“My breaths?”
“You are breathing swiftly.”
“Probably because you are holding me so tightly that I cannot draw in air.”
“Paltry excuse.” His amused tone acted upon her primed senses like a spark to kindling. He was not quizzing her, instead he seemed to be inviting her to enjoy this scandalous moment. No man ever cared about her enjoyment. Not even her beloved father. Her stepbrother Tracy tried, but never quite succeeded.
“I shall scream.”
“If you intended to, you would have already,” he said with great good sense.
“You know this from experience, no doubt.”
He chuckled again, and his laughter cascaded through her, wonderful and intoxicating. Robert had never laughed when he held her tight. He had never laughed at all. This man’s ready amusement felt marvelous. Serena’s blood seemed to flow with warm honey.
He tilted up her chin with his fingertips as though hoping to get a clearer view of her face through the darkness.
“I have no need to force myself upon unwilling women, my dear.”
She did not doubt that, bathing her senses in his musky scent, his arms holding her with leashed strength.
“There is a first time for everything,” she whispered.
“I daresay, but it will not be this time,” he murmured. “Now be a pet and remain still so I can kiss you.” His breath feathered over her cheek and lips, scented with wine. Despite the dark, Serena closed her eyes, her nerves singing with perverse anticipation.
He paused.
“Or perhaps I shall not kiss you after all.”
She swallowed lumpily. Her chance at escape beckoned. But a man’s hand was already spread upon her behind. In for a penny…
“Why not?” she uttered breathlessly.
A beat of silence.
Another.
Finally, “Why not, indeed?” and his lips brushed hers.
His thumb caressed her jaw languidly, tilting her chin up to fit her mouth more fully to his. She released another tiny sigh. He dipped the tip of his tongue between her lips, warmth flooded into her, and Serena awoke from her mystical sleep of sham respectability into the glorious, sparkling realm of her thoroughly tarnished virtue.
